In the Power of One, close up shots are used effectively.

We see this when Geel Piet is forced to eat the poo off Boorman’s foot, a close up is shot of Geel Piet’s face.

This technique created impact by making the audience think of how cruel Boorman is Geel Piet.

The director did this to show how much power the white people had over the black people.
|
This worked well with the over the shoulder shot on Boorman’s face, this showed how much hate white people hated the black people
|
This aspect can be compared with when, PK is being bullied by Botha, a close up shot of PK’s face was used to show how scared and worried he is.

SEXXXY 2
In the power of one, threnody is used.
|
We see this after Pk pushes Botha onto the stick, threnody was used to show the scene getting more intense.
|
This makes the audience feel nervous about what’s going to happen next. It gives the audience the Idea that something bad is going to happen.
|
The purpose of this was to make the scene more dramatic.
|
This worked well with the short silence just before the threnody came in. It made the scene more dramatic and interesting.
|
This aspect can be compared to a scene in Jaws, where the shark is going closer to its target. Threnody was used to make the scene more intense.

SEXXXY 3
In the power of one, high angles are used.
|
We see this when PK is being bullied by Botha. A high angle shot is used looking down a PK, to show that Botha is stronger and taller than PK.
|
This makes the audience think that PK is weak, and makes them feel sorry for PK.
|
The director did this to show who has the power, in this case, it was Botha.
|
Combined with the expression on PK’s face this emphasizes on the idea that he is scared of Botha because he is strong and has all the power.
|
This reminds of the over the shoulder shots used when Geel Piet is being forced to eat the poo off Sargent’s foot. A over the shoulder shot is shot of Boorman’s face looking down at Geel Piet, giving the audience the idea of how Boorman has all the power over Geel Piet.

SEXXXY 4
In the Power of One, sound effects are used.

We see this in a scene of Geel Piet and Boorman, sound effects of buzzing flies are used.
|
This makes the audience think about what is going to happen next and makes the audience think it’s disgusting.
|
The director did this to make the scene more engaging.
|
Combined with sound effects of Boorman sticking his feet in the poo and thumping his foot on the floor, this made the scene more interesting.
|
This can be compared to when Botha gets slapped by one of the guards, Sound effects was used to make the scene more dramatic.

Hey Juanita! This is an awesome essay, it explains and lays out the film very nicely and uses fab descriptive words! I personally used some of those techniques in my essay!!! Next time try using a formal essay format and just hvaing your words laid out!! Really proud though! :)
