English Essay- The Outsiders

SEXXXY 1

In the book, Ponyboy is known to be brave.

An example of this is when he stood up for himself when the Socs teased him. Also when he rescued the children from the burning church.

This shows that being brave is an important attribute to have if you are in a gang. You have to be willing risk everything for your family, which is what Ponyboy would do. If the burning of the church happened earlier in the book, I don’t think Ponyboy would have the guts to save the kids. Mostly because when he ran away with Johnny to the mountains, staying in a church with a limited amount of food and water made him a stronger person.

The author did this to show the readers that not all gang members are bad people, some are willing to risk their lives to save people, and some of them are just good people and are in the gang just for the title.

This reminds of when PK was brave enough to stand up for himself and push Botha, because he was bullying him.

Ponyboy is also known to be loyal.

His loyalty is demonstrated when he’s joins the rumble. Even though he was injured from the fire incident, he was still determined to fight alongside his family (The greasers)

This makes us understand that loyalty is an important thing to have if you are in a gang. Throughout the book Ponyboy’s loyalty becomes stronger, making his relationship with Johnny and The Greasers even stronger.

The purpose of this was to show that although gang members can be intimidating and seem cruel, they still have a heart and are loyal to one another.

This can be juxtaposed to a scene in Moana where loyalty was shown. In order for Moana to return the heart of Te Whiti she had to go through Te Ka. But she couldn’t do it without Maui and his fish hook. Maui was loyal enough to use his fish hook to defeat Te Ka, one of the most important things to him, even though if Te Ka burns his hook it’ll be destroyed.

Another attribute of Ponyboy is kind/caring.

For instance, when he runs away with Johnny after he kills Bob. Although Johnny did something bad and could be sent to prison with him, Ponyboy was loyal enough to run away with him, without caring about the risks.

This shows that in a family being kind and caring is a must. Especially in a gang, where you have more family to care about. Along with this Pony is loyal.

This was done to show us that it is important to be kind and caring, especially in a society where people are judged with everything they do.

This reminds of a short filmed we watched in class called ‘Day Trip’, where a Maori gang member went into a bar and got judged by the people in the bar because he was in a gang, with them not knowing that all he wanted to do was feed his family.

Ponyboy is also outgoing, willing to do anything for his friends.

He is always up for an adventure. We see this when he was willing to go away with Johnny to the park, lot and Jay Mountain. We also see this when he goes often to the drive in.

This shows that in some gangs some gang members are just in it to have fun and want to have an adventure. Ponyboy becomes more outgoing throughout the movie, as he was willing to fight for his brothers (The Greasers).

This was done to show us that some gang members/family members might just need a break from their current life or just to travel.

This can be juxtaposed to a scene in ‘Day Trip’ where a gang member just wanted to go overseas to have a break from the gang life.
