Compare and Contrast- Grease

There are a couple of differences between the films ‘Grease’ to ‘Grease Live’.One of them were the change of lyrics. For example, in Grease live, they changed a few lyrics off the ‘Greased Lightning’ song. Another example is when they excluded a Russian curse word the Rizzo sings in the song ‘Sandra Dee’.

Apart from the differences I found that both musicals are very entertaining. The scene 'Greased lightning' stood out in both movies, but i felt that the original was better. Mainly because John Travolta did a better job at playing 'Danny Zuko' and the original choreography for this scene was better, it kept the audience interested.

English Essay- The Power of One

SEXXXY 1

In the Power of One, close up shots are used effectively.

We see this when Geel Piet is forced to eat the poo off Boorman’s foot, a close up is shot of Geel Piet’s face.

This technique created impact by making the audience think of how cruel Boorman is Geel Piet.

The director did this to show how much power the white people had over the black people.

This worked well with  the over the shoulder shot on Boorman’s face, this showed how much hate white people hated the black people

This aspect can be compared with when, PK is being bullied by Botha, a close up shot of PK’s face was used to show how scared and worried he is.
SEXXXY 2

In the power of one, threnody is used.

We see this after Pk pushes Botha onto the stick, threnody was used to show the scene getting more intense.

This makes the audience feel nervous about what’s going to happen next. It gives the audience the Idea that something bad is going to happen.

The purpose of this was to make the scene more dramatic.

This worked well with the short silence just before the threnody came in. It made the scene more dramatic and interesting.

This aspect can be compared to a scene in Jaws, where the shark is going closer to its target. Threnody was used to make the scene more intense.
SEXXXY 3

In the power of one, high angles are used.

We see this when PK is being bullied by Botha. A high angle shot is used looking down a PK, to show that Botha is stronger and taller than PK.

This makes the audience think that PK is weak, and makes them feel sorry for PK.

The director did this to show who has the power, in this case, it was Botha.

Combined with the expression on PK’s face this emphasizes on the idea that he is scared of Botha because he is strong and has all the power.

This reminds of the over the shoulder shots used when Geel Piet is being forced to eat the poo off Sargent’s foot. A over the shoulder shot is shot of Boorman’s face looking down at Geel Piet, giving the audience the idea of how Boorman has all the power over Geel Piet.
SEXXXY 4

In the Power of One, sound effects are used.

We see this in a scene of Geel Piet and Boorman, sound effects of buzzing flies are used.

This makes the audience think about what is going to happen next and makes the audience think it’s disgusting.

The director did this to make the scene more engaging.

Combined with sound effects of Boorman sticking his feet in the poo and thumping his foot on the floor, this made the scene more interesting.

This can be compared to when Botha gets slapped by one of the guards, Sound effects was used to make the scene more dramatic.

Schrödinger Cat

Erwin Schrödinger is a Nobel-winning Austrian physicist, known for his contribution to the Schrödinger cat experiment (also may be known as a paradox). Born on August 12, 1887, in Vienna, Erwin went on to become a noted theoretical physicist and scholar who came up with a groundbreaking wave equation for electron movements. Schrodinger intended his thought experiment as a discussion of the EPR article- named after its authors Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen- in 1935.

In the experiment, which was well thought about, a cat was placed in a sealed box along with a radioactive trial, a Geiger counter (a device measuring radioactivity by detecting and counting ionizing particles and a bottle of poison. If the device detects that the radioactive material is decomposed, it will activate the smashing of the bottle, killing the cat. For as long as the box is shut, the cat is dead and alive, knowing that it can't be neither, because it cant be confirmed which one it is. If the cat survives, it remembers only being alive. The thought experiment illustrates this apparent paradox. Each alternative seemed absurd to Einstein, who was impressed by the ability of the thought experiment to highlight these issues.

Sadly, Schrodinger died 4th January 1961, Vinne, Austria, of tuberculosis, aged 73.

Little Shop of Horrors

The Meek Shall Inherit

  1. Why does Seymour feed Mushnik to the plant? Seymour feeds Mushnik to the plant because he found out about the incident, where he killed Orin, and because he threatened to tell the police.
  2. Why doesn’t Seymour kill the plant after the plant eats Mushnik? He doesn't kill the plant because he feels like he is going to be famous and earn money, which he thinks will make Audrey happy.
  3. What sacrifice does Seymour make by allowing the plant to live? He puts at risk himself and everyone.
  4. What does the lyric line “The meek are gonna get what’s coming to them by and by” mean to you? The weak guys are going to get what they deserve.
  5. In the song, “The Meek Shall Inherit”, Seymour chooses to keep the plant alive. However, later in the musical, he must live with the consequences of his choice when Audrey dies. What other choices does Seymour make in the musical? Are there any situations where he had no choice? When Seymour had no more blood to give to the plant, he had no choice but to get someone else to feed it. Knowing that no one would give up there blood for free, he had to kill someone.

Audrey II

  1. Is Audrey Two believable as a character? I think Audrey II is not a believable character because plants don't talk.
  2. How do the Audrey II puppets heighten the reality of the musical? The Audrey II puppets heighten the reality by coming in really loud and intimidating.

Critical Analysis

In my opinion I think this musical was entertaining, the music was great, it kept the audience engaged. The dialogue of the musical wasn't bad, the way they talked, it seemed like they were robots. The structure of the musical was well thought about, it began with a catchy theme song, attracting the audience and had a predictable ending. The music and lyrics worked well with the actors, it suited their personality character-wise.
